Monster Hunter Generations is out in North America now, and it brings with it plenty to do — or more specifically, plenty of monster hunting to do! Of course, you can't jump right in to hunting monsters without preparation, and the best way to hunt the biggest and baddest monsters is to increase your star rank. But how do you increase your hunter rank? Fear not! We have a list below of everything you need to do if you want to level up in Monster Hunter Generations — and if you need more help making sense of the game, be sure to check out our other guides!

For a little background, the way leveling works in Monster Hunter Generations is more or less how you'd expect: You complete quests! The tricky part is knowing which quests to complete, and the game itself doesn't always make it super obvious which ones will help you rank up — though the quest giver will occasionally give hints as to which quests will help rank you up, so don't just ignore her dialog!

How to make sense of Key Quests and Urgent Quests

When you're given a list of 1-Star quests, 2-Star quests, and so on, only a select few of them are actually "Key Quests" — that is, a quest needed to unlock an Urgent Quests. What's an Urgent Quest? A type of quest that can only be unlocked after completing all necessary Key Quests, and one will increase your rank upon completion. Following me so far? Good, because there's one more nuance to go over before jumping into the quest lists themselves.

You have two separate star ranks to keep track of in the game: Village star ranks and Hunter's Hub star ranks. Village quests are intended for solo gameplay and include a mix of hunting and gathering quests, while Hunter's Hub quests are intended for group play and focus solely on hunting monster — however, if you increase your Village star ranking, you can theoretically take on some of the lower-level Hunter's Hub quests all by yourself!

Okay, so what quests do I actually need to rank up in 'Monster Hunter Generations'?

Let's start with the Village quests! Again, these are intended for solo play and start out a little slower than the Hunter's Hub quests — that's not to say they're a pushover, though! Monster Hunter is all about being strong enough to actually hunt monsters. If you need some tips on making that happen, don't forget to check out our overview guide!

Now, without further ado, the following lists will help you identify just which quests to do in order to rank up in Monster Hunter Generations.

Village Quests

1-Star Key Quest objectives

  • Deliver 8 Royal Fern
  • Deliver 5 Abyssal Shrooms
  • Slay 10 Maccao
  • Slay 10 Jaggi

  • Hunt an Uragaan
  • Urgent Quest (to unlock next rank): Hunt a Glavenus

6-Star Key Quest objectives

  • Hunt a Gore Magala
  • Hunt a Zinogre
  • Hunt a Tigrex
  • Hunt a Seregios
  • Hunt a Brachydios
  • Urgent Quest (needed to unlock final Urgent Quest): Slay Shagaru Magala
  • Urgent Quest: Hunt a Gammoth, a Astalos, a Mizutsune, and a Glavenus

As for the Hunter's Hub quests, you'll need to complete the following Key Quests and Urgent Quests to increase your rank.

Keep in mind, while these may be chasing after some of the same monster types, the quests are intended as group content, which means the monsters are all going to be a lot stronger. As someone who made the mistake of hunting a Hunter's Hub Great Maccao instead of the Village's, I can attest to the increased difficulty.

And if you're wondering, no, these quests do not scale based on party size. Sounds like a no-lose situation, right? Wrong! You're still limited to three deaths no matter how big your party, and the death limit is shared. If you want to be a good friend and help someone less experienced, make sure that person is skilled in the art of not dying — a weak link can fail the quest for everyone.
