Telltale’s upcoming Batman adventure promises us a new take on a classic tale. Earlier in the year Telltale, famous for their beautiful episodic portrayals, revealed that their newest comic book signing will be unlike anything we have ever experienced before.
So far, they are right on the money. Telltale has chosen to switch the game focus from the cape and the suit to the man behind the mask. The game will tailor its narrative around the world renowned philanthropist playboy Billionaire, Bruce Wayne. That doesn’t mean we are not going to get our fill of bad guy bashing awesomeness. After all, there is room inside that suit for Bruce and Batman.
New hints are today revealed as we take a closer look at the latest trailer to come from Batman: The Telltale Series.
Man, it feels great to be able to talk about a Batman game again and this latest trailer from Telltale really gives me a lot of things to talk about; 11 things to be precise. Trust me, if you blinked at all whilst watching that trailer then you would have missed something important. So, without further ado, “Let’s put a smile on that face.”
11. Bruce is a younger more inexperienced character
Bruce is clearly a much younger, less experienced character in Telltale’s adaptation of the franchise. In the opening scene of the trailer we see him nursing a wound to the stomach. Throughout the rest of the trailer we see that the character is still forming alliances, making deals and developing as a character. As we become Batman, we will have to shape this evolution.
10. The Wayne Manor Is Being Converted Into A Hospital
If you pause the trailer at the correct moment you will see a sign telling us that the great manor is currently in the early stages of a conversion into a hospital. As Bruce, it will be our job to decide exactly what the fate of the manor will be. From the looks of it there is still time to stop the build. What will you do?
9. The Batmobile Is Not A Tank
The trailer shows us that the Batmobile will not be a big-ass tank in the story. We see (and hear) what appears to be more of a supercar than street shredding artillery. At least we won’t be destroying the city every time we go out on a mission like we did in Arkham.
8. Dent Still Has A Full Face
Dent is portrayed as a rather big character, he seems to be bigger than Bruce, and we could see a different approach to Dent in Telltale's portrayal. We all know his unfortunate outcome but the journey is long. What will change is probably up to us, the players.
7. Vicki Vale Plays A Significant Role… Finally
Vicki Vale is right there in the trailer. Telltale is quick to establish Vicky as a significant character in the title. Her appearances have often been fleeting; a flirtatious interaction and gone. This time around Vicki and her relationship with Bruce will be instrumental on Batman’s psyche and it will be up to the player to manage their relationship.
6. The New Suit Is subtle
I love the new suit, it is very Frank Miller. The shortened ears/horns the simplistic, utilitarian look just works for me considering that we are near the beginning of Bats' evolution.
5. Bruce And Gordon Are At The Beginning Of Their Journey Together
We can see from the trailer that Gordon has not yet made Commissioner and Wayne is till yet to form an affinity with him. It is clearly that they are at the very beginning of this iconic partnership. It will be up to you to strengthen and develop this relationship as you play.
4. Selina Kyle Is Already A Well Established Catwoman
You can see from this scene that Catwoman is already a competent and established character. She is definitely giving off serious temptress vibes. The kind of vibes that you know will get you into trouble but you pursue them anyway. Be careful Batman.
So who is this guy and why is he getting so much screen time? He clearly looks like he is a goon adhering to the orders of someone higher up. But, did you clock the London accent introduced? Nolan North portrayed the Penguin in the Arkham games as proper cockney gangster, so the introduction of this bizarre accent into this scene can only mean one thing, right?
2. Still The Guardian Of The City
As the trailer wraps up, the images flash by at a tremendous pace but if you slow it all down there is a beautifully iconic image mixed in amongst them. Batman is still the guardian of Gotham in Telltale’s game – the imagery here is superhero 101. Our burdened hero watches over the people of the city – I love this scene – I could look at this one still for hours.
1. The Joker Mocks Us, Again!
Did you note Joker’s influence in the trailer? It’s just a very little tease but one that has me wondering if we will get another Joker centric narrative. Although Telltale states that they will be going another way with this title, they didn’t say that it would not include our favourite franchise icons.
If you listen very carefully at around the 1:54 mark in the trailer, you will hear the unmistakable cackle of the Joker. Will Joker play a part in this story? Do you want Joker to play a part?
