This week, Blizzard have released the first new hero to join the impressive roster already available in their highly popular competitive shooter, Overwatch. After weeks of speculation and anticipation, we finally get to use Ana for the first time, but was she worth the wait?
First of all, a bit of backstory. So sit down children, it's story time. Once upon a time, Ana was a member of the original Overwatch team, killing Omnics and generally having a great time. After supposedly being killed by Widowmaker during a hostage rescue mission, Ana disappeared for years, and was presumed dead by the rest of the team. However, in reality, she was spending time under the radar to reflect on her life. After a while, she re-emerged, coming back to help the fight against Talon with her trusty Biotic Rifle!
Well, that's the official story. I personally think Ana came back just to give Pharah (her daughter, by the way) some lectures on rocket launcher safety. Like seriously, she fires that thing everywhere!
So what does Ana bring to the party? And no, I'm not talking about Jägermeister...unfortunately...
Well, first of all, Ana is equipped with her trusty Biotic Rifle. Ever had an injection? Well imagine a gun which fires an injection syringe at the speed of a bullet. Yeah, you get the picture. With her Biotic Rifle, Ana can give a healing boost to teammates across the map. The shots she fires from her super-speed syringe sniper provide around 75 healing to teammates, whilst dealing around 80 damage to any enemies she hits. I found her weapon to be effective on both attack and defence, but I found it most useful when using it from a vantage point overlooking a control zone.
Next up, her abilities. First of all, and possibly my new favourite ability in the game, is Ana's "Sleep Dart". This allows Ana to fire a tranquilizer from her wrist mounted dart launcher, sending one enemy for an early bedtime. I've taken to calling this weapon the "Nap blaster", and personally I think that name is far superior to the "Sleep Dart".
When an enemy is hit by a sleep dart, they become immobilised for around 5 seconds. This allows Ana to escape from a dangerous encounter, or to line up an enemy for the killing blow from her rifle. Though I like to think Ana is just a concerned mother, trying her best to make sure that everyone is getting enough sleep. I mean let's face it, Torbjörn could probably use some beauty sleep...or a shave...or both...
Next up, Ana can make use of her Biotic Grenade ability to aid her teammates in battle. This usefull little gizmo has the same basic function as her Biotic Rifle, providing a healing boost to allies whilst dealing damage to enemies. This is particularly effective in close quarters, and it's a good way to keep yourself healed at all times if you're playing as Ana. I mean, there's nothing quite like throwing a live grenade at your feet every once in a while to keep yourself going.
Finally, Ana has her ultimate ability, "Nano Boost". Nano Boost allows Ana to hit an ally with a combat boosting syringe, allowing them to move faster, deal more damage with their attacks, and take less damage from enemies. This is an amazing ability for the attacking team in particular, and few things are as terrifying as seeing a suped-up Reinhardt sprinting around the map, crushing people with his fast-swinging hammer.
Overall, I think Ana has been an amazing addition to an already incredible roster of heroes (and villains) in Overwatch! Her abilities make her a formidable force on both attack and defence, and the effective use of these versatile gadgets can really make or break a team's victory efforts. I mean after all, mothers always knows best.
What do you think of Ana, Overwatch's newest babysitting badass?
