The release of the long-awaited Five Nights at Freddy's spin-off, called Sister Location, is only a little over a week away and we here at Now Loading are champing at the bit for a coveted look at the newest fright fest from developer Scott Cawthon.
It's been a while since we had a new Five Nights at Freddy's game that was actually, well, a horror game (since July 23rd, 2015, to be exact), and with all the mystery and hype surrounding this newest addition to the FNaF family, we're excited for what the indie master of scares has in store for us this time.
To gear ourselves up and perhaps refresh us a bit on the world and lore, we've come up with a list of seven different things to help prepare us for Sister Location's release. Though perhaps we should have included "purchase adult diapers"...
Ready Yourselves for Sister Location with these Seven Steps
1. Replay the Original Four Games
This kind of goes without saying, but replaying the games is a pretty good way to reacquaint yourself with not only the world and characters of FNaF, but the gameplay mechanics themselves. Though Scott Cawthon is great at coming up with new twists, variations, and surprises in each new game's formula, getting back in the mindset of having to protect yourself from living animatronics should give you a one-up on even the creepiest of face-flaring circus freaks.
Maybe you can even try to unlock every secret or go for that 9/9/9/9 mode if you were never able to master it...
2. Watch Other People Replay the Original Four Games...
Of course, if you're like me and love horror games but are too much of a little baby chicken wimp to actually play them yourself, you can relive the original games vicariously through your favorite YouTuber! There's nothing like the feeling of camaraderie that comes from surviving a night at Freddy's together complete with witty commentary, stupid jokes, and hilarious reactions.
My personal favorite is Markiplier (who got me into the FNaF games in the first place), but there are plenty of other YouTubers who've played through the entire series of Five Nights at Freddy's games for your viewing pleasure. Take your pick!
3. Familiarize Yourself With the Newest Theories and Lore
There is absolutely no shortage of theories when it comes to the world of Five Nights at Freddy's. Fans love linking together even the tiniest hints, easter eggs, and pixels from each of the games to come up with backstories and explanations for every character and animatronic (and some of them are positively wild). Sister Location is no different, despite not even being out yet. Fan theories already abound, based on every scrap of information we've been given from the game's promotional images, trailers, and even the source code.
The Game Theorists on YouTube have put together a pretty mind-blowing video going in-depth into how they think Sister Location will play out. It's a great place to start if you're anxious for every little golden nugget of info you can find (watch out for spoilers for Five Nights at Freddy's World and The Silver Eyes, though).
4. Read the Novel
If you haven't read the Five Nights at Freddy's novel The Silver Eyes by Scott Cawthon and Kira Breed-Wrisley yet, DO IT. While opinions on the book have been mixed, it does give the most in-depth story behind the world of FNaF to date, and if you've watched the video above, you'll notice it may just have a key connection with the upcoming Sister Location. To make sure you're able to connect every puzzle piece, recognize every clue, and put together every bit of story for Sister Location once it comes out, you'll definitely want to give this a read (or a re-read if you've already plowed through it!).
Plus, hey, reading is good for you.
5. Immerse Yourself in the Fan Songs
Fan songs have been being written about the Five Nights at Freddy's games since the first game was released back in 2014, and the speed of their composition has yet to slow. There are even songs already written for Sister Location, if you can believe it. While not every FNaF fan song is a work of art, there are some excellently written, addictive little numbers you might lend an ear to. Here are some my personal favorites to get you started:
- "It's Me" by TryHardNinja
- "Survive the Night" by MandoPony
- "Creepin' Towards the Door" by Griffinilla w/ Lenich & Kirya
- "Five Long Nights" by JT Machinima
- "Mechanical Instinct" by the Aviators
- "Five Nights at Freddy's 1 Song" by The Living Tombstone
This video of "I am the Purple Guy" by DAGames is also one of the best FNaF animations I've ever seen:
6. Play the Five Nights at Fuckboy's Series
If you've never heard of the Five Nights at Fuckboy's series of games developed by Sable Lynn and Joshua Shaw and based on the FNaF universe, you're missing out. They're incredibly crude, incredibly difficult, but also incredibly hilarious. While they might not be everyone's cup of tea, if you ever wanted an absolutely ridiculous romp through Freddy Fazbear's pizzeria in all of its incarnations complete with text-to-speech voice over and Balloon Boy the ultimate pimp, these are your ticket to a good night.
Games have been made based on the first, second, and third Five Nights at Freddy's games, and each one has a more developed story than the last, culminating in a genuinely emotional FNaF 3 showdown. You can download them from GameJolt here—just keep 'em away from the kiddies!
7. Watch the Trailer
If you haven't watched the actual trailer yet, then what are you doing?! Seems like the most obvious first (or final?) step to prepare yourself for the newest jaunt into the land of killer animatronics.

If that didn't get you excited for the game's upcoming release, nothing will.
