Following the release of the latest campaign trailer for Battlefield 1, EA has today, revealed 12 minutes of frontline gameplay that is nothing short of thrilling.

The Battlefield 1 campaign is broken down into five main ‘War Stories’, each story revolves around a different character from one of the world’s great armies involved in the Great War. The campaign trailer below introduces us to the characters.

Despite being incredibly moving and utterly awe-inspiring the trailer showed us very little in terms of campaign gameplay. But we didn't have to wait long for a remedy. And what a treat it is.

The gameplay on show is from the ‘Storm of Steel’ story – a segment of gameplay that will be accessible early (Oct 13) via EA Access. This story is chock-a-block with close quarter combat, fire spitting machine guns, thunderous tanks and pounding artillery.

The Gameplay

The new video gives us a thrilling insight into the game's inner workings. It would seem that this is how we will begin all our characters retrospective journeys in Battlefield 1 – a cinematic interlude that thrusts us directly into playable segments of gameplay.

As with any real world event based shooter, the game begins with a harrowing military based quote. The text chosen for Battlefield 1 is nothing short of horrifying.

More than 60 million soldiers fought in ‘The War to End All Wars.’ It ended nothing. Yet it changed the world forever. What follows is frontline combat. You are not expected to survive.

Implementing such techniques is a great way of allowing a real sense of semblance to the game. Let’s not forget that this actually happened and Millions of people died in the Great War. EA has also introduced a system in which it will name a fallen soldier whenever the player dies. A nice touch, I thought.

From this stark, chilling interlude we are thrust right into the action, our protagonist is dazed and confused as all out war tears up the earth around him. It is chaotic, brutal and terrifying -- Battlefield 1 is an all out assault on the senses!

The gameplay on show is incredibly intense. This is a game that rivals the very best that Hollywood has to offer. If there was ever a precedence set to a genre it is this, Battlefield 1 raises the bar to a whole new level. You are witness to the birth of a new generation of FPS gaming excellence. Expect nothing but total immersion come October 21.

Battlefield 1 is available on Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
