The PlayStation 4 family is steadily growing. The standard PS4 console boasts over 40 million units sold since 2013 while the Xbox One lags behind with almost half the sales numbers. And while there are plenty of reasons as to why Sony has been so successful in this particular generation, we cannot deny that their lineup of exclusive and cross-platform games have been a deciding factor for many a PS4 gamer. Fancy jumping on the band wagon? Well here are the games you'll need!
This article will be updated each month as new (and better!) games are made available.
The Best Games on Sony's PlayStation 4
- Developer: Blizzard Entertainment
- Publisher: Blizzard Entertainment
We're kind of obsessed with Overwatch here, but then who isn't? Borrowing from formulas first popularized by the likes of Team Fortress 2, Blizzard masterfully crafted a team-based multiplayer extravaganza which surpasses all that came before it.
With an ever growing list of diverse characters (lova ya Hanzo), great maps and game modes, and the potential to become one of the most compelling eSports in the world, this is one game your PS4 should never be without.
- Developer: FromSoftware
- Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
Boasting one of the most compelling game worlds in recent memory, Bloodborne is indicative of a perfect video game. Borrowing heavily from their previous Souls series titles, FromSoftware crafted a gothic landscape which ultimately surpassed the achievements of Dark Souls thanks to a more fluid and accelerated combat system.
The boss battles are brutal, the weapons are divine and the consistency of this game's bleak atmosphere is nothing short of compelling.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
- Developer: CD Projekt RED
- Publisher: CD Projekt
What else can be said about a game that's been labelled "one of the greatest of all time"? The Witcher 3 is the epitome of modern RPG game design, featuring compelling characters, an involving narrative, superb combat mechanics and sex upon a unicorn. It's true!
- Developer: Bethesda Game Studios
- Publisher: Bethesda Softworks
While a number of fans have been reluctant to shower Bethesda's latest RPG with the kind of praise the developer has grown accustomed to, Fallout 4 has stood tall in the face of criticism and emerged victorious from its glitch-ridden vault. It's a ludicrously enjoyable game set in one of gaming's most famous universes. Your PS4 deserves it.
- Developer: Playdead
- Publisher: Playdead
While INSIDE is certainly one of the more subtle adventures you'll come across on our list, its size by no means denotes its worth. As compelling as Playdead's Limbo, INSIDE thrusts players into a twisted landscape as a terrified young boy who's forced to undergo horrific forms of torture and mutilation—sounds great, right?
Complete with intelligent puzzles, beautiful animations and a truly insane narrative arc, you simply must experience the madness for yourself.
Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
- Developer: Naughty Dog
- Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
Following the success of the triumphant The Last of Us, gamers around the world had a great deal of expectations for Naughty Dog's followup title. Luckily, almost all of them were met. Nathan Drake's final romp across the globe is a compelling adventure and possibly the most beautiful game on the PS4.
Grand Theft Auto V
- Developer: Rockstar North
- Publisher: Rockstar Games
There aren't many games that can claim to be the fastest selling entertainment product in history, but it's what Rockstar North's Grand Theft Auto V achieved in 2013. Three years later, it holds up beautifully and remains one of the most enjoyable ways to spend your time on any gaming platform.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
- Developer: Kojima Productions
- Publisher: Konami Digital Entertainment
Though Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain's development cycle was fraught with shocking displays of misconduct on the side of Konami and ultimately ended with the firing of the Metal Gear Solid franchise's creator, Hideo Kojima, the game is a marvel.
The ending is certainly tainted (as is the continuation of the series) and there are a few missteps along the way, but MGSV features some of the greatest gameplay mechanics ever conceived. Stealth never felt so good, but what else did we expect from Snake, huh?
- Developer: Psyonix
- Publisher: Psyonix
It's over a year later and Rocket League is still devouring our free time. This finely tuned rocket-fuelled soccer game is one of the most addictive titles on the PlayStation 4 (see: planet). Mastering aerials, backflips, the perfect lunges and gravity defying saves is some of the best fun you can expect with a controller in-hand. By a long shot, this is one of the best indie games ever crafted.
- Developer: Firaxis Games
- Publisher: 2K Games
Having recently made its debut on Xbox One and PS4, XCOM 2 is no longer one of the best PC games, it's one of the best games of all time. That may seem like an exaggeration, but this is the epitome of strategy. It's got a great story, stupidly addictive combat mechanics, fantastic new abilities and a damn fine look. Play it. Immediately.
- Developer: id Software
- Publisher: Bethesda Softworks
After a disappointing multiplayer beta across all platforms, id Software's DOOM seemed... doomed to fail. We caught a glimpse of what appeared to be yet another generic FPS set to bore gaming minds across the globe. Then we played the campaign. Holy sh&%.
DOOM is beyond chaotic, fuelled with satisfying guns, tough enemy encounters, great locations and a seriously badass soundtrack. This is what a shooter is supposed to feel like.
- Developer: Thekla, Inc.
- Publisher: Thekla, Inc.
From the outside, The Witness' puzzles seem simplistic and repetitive. But once you start playing this remarkably intelligent indie title, you come to realize that its difficulty and depth is beyond compare. You'll get stuck. A lot. But uncovering the solution to a particular area is one of the most satisfying experiences on the PS4.
