Step aside, PewDiePie. Forbes magazine has named Mark "Markiplier" Fischback the world's top video gaming influencer.
The Hawaiian-born YouTube sensation has been creating videos for a long time now, totaling up more than 7 billion views worldwide across his ever-expanding YouTube channel. Markiplier's dedicated fans have helped him raise more than $1 million for charity.
Top Of The Pile
Forbes' lists have long been recognized as the most important to be on for any business entrepreneur. The publication's Business of Influence list, which breaks down the top global influencers in a wide variety of categories, is now in its second year. Forbes staff writer Clare O'Connor, who is the list's overseer, writes:
"These social media power players have managed to monetize not just existing platforms like Instagram and YouTube, but in many cases emerging apps and sites like Musical.ly and Twitch.”
She continues to describe how:
“They're landing production deals based on their prowess on Vine, the now-defunct video app that forced users to be super creative, with only seconds to make an impact. In some cases, these folks can command seven figures per sponsored campaign."
To create the list, Forbes measured the reach and audience sizes of each YouTuber's channels. They also analyzed factors such as resonance, vitality, relevance and engagement. They also determined the weight of each candidate's earnings per post and reviewed their business deals — for example, book and app earnings.
The list only included those who've built their way up from the bottom and had sculpted their large followings organically. (A celebrity with a YouTube channel would not have been included, as they had not built their presence purely from YouTube.) Forbes also limited their scope to users who posted primarily in English.
The official ranking can be found here, but here are the top 10 most influential gamers, as decided by Forbes:
- The Diamond Minecart
- Tom Cassell
- Sky Does Minecraft
- Mari Takahashi
